Publishing a research paper as an engineering student is more achievable than most students think. Here is a practical, step-by-step guide based on what our mentors have used to guide 300+ students to publication.
A publishable topic must: (1) Address a real problem, (2) Use or compare established methods, (3) Produce measurable results, (4) Add something new — even if small. Example: "Disease prediction using standard ML" is a project. "Comparative analysis of ensemble methods for early-stage diabetes prediction on imbalanced datasets" is a paper.
Read 20–30 papers in your domain using Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, and ResearchGate. Use Zotero or Mendeley to manage citations. Identify: What has been done? What gap exists? Your paper fills that gap.
Your methodology must be reproducible. Keep detailed notes on datasets (name, size, preprocessing), model parameters, evaluation metrics, and experimental conditions. Statistical significance tests (t-test, p-value) strengthen credibility.
Standard IEEE conference paper: Abstract (150–250 words), Introduction, Related Work, Proposed Methodology, Experimental Setup, Results & Discussion, Conclusion, References. Use the official IEEE LaTeX or Word template from IEEE.org.
Good starting points for first publication: IEEE ICACCS, ICCCA, NCVPRIPG — these are tier-2 conferences that accept solid student work. UGC CARE listed journals for journal publications. Avoid predatory journals (Beall's List is your guide).
Good papers take 4–8 weeks to write properly. Conference review: 4–6 weeks. Revision: 2–4 weeks. Plan backwards from your college submission deadline.
